Aldi to open 40 new stores as profits soar

Low-cost supermarket chain Aldi has unveiled multimillion pound expansion plans as it reported a near six-fold increase in annual profits.

The German retailer pledged to invest £181m in opening 40 new stores by the end of 2013, taking its total number of UK stores to more than 500. Cash-strapped middle-class shoppers were behind a 30% rise in turnover in the year to December 31 to £2.8bn and a 450% leap in operating profits to £102.9m.
