Applegreen enjoys good start to 2017

By John Mulligan

Forecourt retailer Applegreen, which has six outlets in Northern Ireland, said it's had a positive start of 2017 with business delivering strong growth in non-fuel sales.

The company said it has also opened two new petrol filling stations in the US since the start of the year and has made "very good progress" in generating further opportunities to grow there.

Applegreen has motor service areas on both sides of the M1 at Lisburn and on the M2 in Templepatrick, as well as smaller service stations in Hillsborough, Ballymena and Coleraine.

At its annual general meeting in Dublin yesterday, shareholders also approved the payment of a maiden dividend of €1.25 (£1) per share, for a total of about €1m (£0.9m). Applegreen floated on the Irish stock market in 2015.

In the Republic, Applegreen said it had added four new petrol filling stations since the start of the year, as well as one service area and five dealer sites. In the UK, it has opened three new petrol filling stations as well as its motorway service area in Lisburn.

"The pipeline of service areas continues to develop in both Ireland and the UK," chairman Danny Kitchen told shareholders.

"We have a significant number of prospects in both core markets at various stages of the planning process and are confident of further expanding in each territory."

Applegreen is planning to develop a number of motorway service areas in Great Britain.
