Asda staff to reap bonus for good year

Full-time staff at Asda stores across Northern Ireland will have an added jingle in their pockets this weekend as the supermarket pays out a bonus to those with over six months service.

A maximum bonus pay out of up to £437.50 will be given to store and depot workers — with Enniskillen, Strabane, Omagh, Kilkeel, Coleraine, Dundonald and Belfast’s Westwood and Shore Road stores all qualifying for the maximum bonus.

The average bonus is around £278.

The bonus is based on how the store performed against its target for 2009.

The company said positive results were driven by an increase in customer numbers and higher average basket spend after it broadened its appeal.

It says it welcomed one million more people through its stores each week.

Asda said it would create around 900 new jobs in Northern Ireland this year thanks to a store extension in Enniskillen and new stores in Crumlin, Larne and Antrim.

It already has 13 food stores and one non-food Asda Living store, and employs 2,500 people in Northern Ireland.

Asda’s Enniskillen store has been among the top performing stores throughout the UK as a result of the surge in shoppers from the Republic crossing the border to cash in on the strong euro.

Kieran Shanahan, the company’s regional operations manager, said: “I’m really pleased that we can share Asda’s success with our fantastic colleague team here.

“We’ve had a great year, and so much of that is due to the care, attention and service which our customers receive from all those who work at the store.

“They deserve every credit for their hard work and dedication and this bonus reflects how much we appreciate their efforts.”
