Ballymena engineering firm grows with £850k investment

By Clare Weir

A Ballymena engineering firm is hiring 12 new staff in an expansion worth over £850,000.

Smith's Engineering Works has doubled turnover in the last three years and is now planning to increase sales in Great Britain and the Republic by targeting the oil, gas and security sectors.

The firm has been trading for over 50 years and managing director Darwin Smith said it is targeting new customers and sectors.

"We have identified opportunities in a number of sectors and are now investing to ensure we have the infrastructure and skills to fully exploit them," he said.

The company's expansion is worth £868,000 in total. Invest NI has offered £48,000 of support for the jobs, which will bring the company's total employment to 38 by the end of 2015. Nine of the new jobs have salaries above the private sector median.

Kevin McCann, Invest NI's director of advanced engineering and construction said Smith's was thriving thanks to a focus on exports.

"Invest NI has worked with Smith's Engineering Works over several years to help it build skills, carry out research and development, and develop a robust business development strategy," he added.
