Belfast restaurant Shu on the lookout for young talent

By Staff Reporter

Acclaimed south Belfast restaurant Shu is on the hunt for the best young cooks in Northern Ireland.

Shu has launched its first chef apprenticeship programme with Belfast Metropolitan College.

It has operated on the Lisburn Road for 17 years and won the title of Best Restaurant in Northern Ireland and the UK National Restaurant Awards for three years in a row, from 2012 to 2014. It's also listed in the Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurants in Ireland.

Now it's searching for four young cooks who'll learn from head chef Brian McCann, who took part in BBC series the Great British Menu in 2011.

Brian said: "This is a brilliant opportunity for four young people who aren't afraid of hard work and have a genuine desire to work as a professional chef.

"I started my own career as an apprentice and I value the essential role it plays in our industry.

"We have had many young cooks through our kitchen, some of whom have gone on to work in some of the world's most renowned restaurants."

Chefs who learned their trade at Shu include Colin McSherry, who later worked for Gordon Ramsay.
