A MAN, his wife and daughter have been given boardroom bans for their conduct at the helm of a hardware sales firm in Co Down.

Meryvn Richard Coulson (66) was disqualified as a director for eight years, and his wife Elva Ruth (65) and their daughter Ruth Elva McHugh Coulson (35) for six years after their firm Mercol (NI) Limited went bust owing £184,000.

The trio, who live at Rockport Road in Holywood, ran the business from Portaferry Road in Newtownards.

All three gave disqualification undertakings to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment over unfit conduct including using £173,000 for the running of the company that was owed to the Crown. They failed to file accounts over three years from 2007 to 2009, and allowed their firm to trade as a 'phoenix' of a separate company called Mercol Limited.

Mr Coulson also accepted that he had failed to co-operate with an investigation by the Official Receiver, leading to his longer ban.

Directors can be disqualified for unfit conduct for between two to 15 years.
