BT experts have a vision

By Clare Weir

A crack team of BT software specialists in Northern Ireland is helping to develop the latest in TV, internet and entertainment.

The 220-strong BT Innovate and Design team is working on BT Vision 2, due to be launched later this year.

Marc Watson, chief executive of BT Vision, BT's digital television service, was in the Riverside Tower in Belfast this week to watch the team at work.

Also in the pipeline and being worked on in Belfast is YouView, a joint venture to create a next generation broadband TV service, with the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and ITV, with communications firms Arqiva and TalkTalk also involved.

Mr Watson was full of praise for the team based in Belfast.

"There is real innovation happening in Northern Ireland, which can be seen as a global development centre in BT terms," he said.

"The level of expertise is second to none with world class capabilities."

The software experts have been working on new digital box technology including giving customers the capability to compile music playlists and bookmark their favourite movies.

"We are now going to be able to offer telephone, internet and now an improved television service in a simple, affordable package and it is being worked on right here in Belfast," Mr Watson added.
