Care home expansion drive gives jobs boost

Nursing home and hotel firm, The Macklin Group, is creating 140 jobs as part of a major £4m investment in a new luxury care home in Belfast.

The family-owned business, which owns Malone Lodge Hotel & Apartments in Belfast, is opening the private nursing home in Dunmurry next month.

The Parkmanor private nursing home in Dunmurry has 78 en-suite bedrooms, with plasma screen TVs and telephone and internet connections.

Owner Gareth Macklin said the company wanted to create a nursing home with the comforts of a hotel.

"The fit-out, furnishings and facilities are being done to luxury hotel standard," he said. "The entrance foyer is absolutely stunning with handmade carpets, antique fireplaces and bespoke furniture."

Carpets were purchased from Carpetworld and a number of local suppliers benefited from contracts during the nursing home's construction.

Residents will be catered for by the award-winning chef of the company's Malone Lodge Hotel, Deane Butler, who won Northern Ireland head chef of the year in 2009.

Mr Macklin said the rates have not yet been finalised but the current rate of top-of-the-range nursing homes is £537 to £800 per week.

"We will be very competitive and offer value for money," he said. "Our number one focus is that we are 100% about care. It comes down to the team of staff - from the nurses and care assistants to the cleaners. We are extremely particular about our recruitment process to make sure we get the best staff."

The new nursing home extends The Macklin Group's portfolio to four care homes across counties Antrim and Londonderry.

The company recently opened a new wing in Ratheane Nursing Home, in Coleraine which has created 20 new jobs. It is launching its second phase of recruitment for Parkmanor which, when complete, will employ a total of 120 full and part-time staff.

Mr Macklin said the large investment is a result of the ageing population and the demand for quality private care.
