Centra notches up 3.5% rise in sales

Retail chain Centra enjoyed sales of €1.48bn (£122bn) last year, a 3.5% rise on 2012.

The group, which is run by independent retailers and controlled by the Cork-based Musgrave group, said that sales of its own-brand range rose 17% during the year.

The chain also achieved record sales during last summer as Ireland enjoyed a rare heatwave, and also over the Christmas period.

Martin Kelleher, the managing director of Centra, said 2013 had proved successful for the chain despite the continuing tough economic climate. He said the own-brand range was instrumental in driving the sales increases.
