Dairy company wins cheddar contract with supermarket giant

A Northern Ireland dairy company has won a contract to supply all of Lidl's own label cheddar cheese across Europe.

Dale Farm will make the supermarket's Valley Spire and Simply branded cheese for distribution to 750 Lidl stores in the UK and Ireland.

It will also supply 1,800 stores in Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Poland, Portugal and Spain.

Dale Farm already supplies cheese to Lidl, but the latest deal will see sales to the supermarket ramped up considerably.

David Dobbin, Dale Farm Group Chief Executive said it follows hefty investment by the company: "Over the last three years, we have invested over £40m in developing world-class manufacturing facilities. As a result, our cheese manufacturing capacity at our Dunmanbridge site in Cookstown has doubled to over 50,000 tonnes per year.

"We now have best in class cheese making and packing capability and the economies of scale needed to successfully compete internationally; winning this Lidl business is confirmation of the progress we are making.

"Securing contracts such as this ensures the continued growth of our business and is great news for the 1,600 local dairy farmers who supply us with high quality milk. We look forward to developing our relationship with Lidl for many years to come."
