Discount retail chain B&M Bargains to open two new stores in Ulster

A discount store chain is to open two new stores in Northern Ireland in the coming weeks.

B&M Bargains will have opened 14 new stores across Northern Ireland in just 12 months by the end of this year, with further expansion planned.

A recently opened store in the retail park on Lonsdale Road, Armagh, will be followed by new branches at Connswater and Springhill in Bangor over the next two weeks.

The firm said further expansion is planned in 2011.

B&M currently employs 1,200 people in Northern Ireland.

B&M's expansion follows news that cut-price clothing retailer Peacocks is soon to open in Belfast's Donegall Place.

David McNellis, a director with commercial property agency Lisney, brokered the deal to bring B&M Bargains to the scheme in Armagh.

He said the current economic environment suits the company's business model, with customers attracted by their low prices and broad product ranges.

"Retailers like B&M have been very active, acquiring sites across Northern Ireland, often securing those units that are vacant following administrations."
