Earthquake silver lining for building contractors

Northern Ireland construction firms could soon be able to explore rebuilding opportunities in the earthquake-stricken New Zealand city of Christchurch.

Exporters are being invited to join a proposed Invest NI trade mission covering Auckland and the South Island city of Christchurch – provided they can show they are in a position to export to New Zealand.

In a fact sheet on the proposed trip, Invest NI said New Zealand was a "relatively easy" country to do business with due to its similarities to the UK.

The economic development agency said New Zealand was the UK's fifth-biggest partner and one of the UK's top 50 export markets.

The opportunities for construction firms include infrastructure projects in Auckland, the country's national infrastructure plan and rebuilding in Christchurch.

The city was devastated in the 2010 earthquake, with more than 100,000 homes and 3,000 businesses damaged.

Firms interested in joining the trip in November can contact Naomi Magowan by telephoning 028 9069 8132 or e-mailing
