Engineering firm Schivo lays off 41 in north west

By John Mulgrew

The loss of 41 staff members at a Londonderry manufacturer has been branded a blow for the industry. Engineering company Schivo NI laid the workers off this week.

The move represents more than half of its shop floor staff.

The firm, formerly Maydown Precision Engineering, was sold off in a pre-pack administration to Waterford-based Schivo for £1.6m last year.

Stephen Kelly, chief executive of Manufacturing NI, said: "The company, as it was previously known, has been a resilient company.

"This is obviously a blow for the advanced manufacturing sector in the north west.

"But we hope the company would do all they can to protect the remaining jobs, and to win contracts for future jobs for what is a talented workforce."

Schivo NI employed 83 people making precision components for aerospace giants such as Airbus and Boeing before this week's losses.

When Maydown Precision Engineering was acquired by Schivo last July, the company employed 133 staff.

However, 15 workers were let go immediately following the pre-pack takeover.
