Firm can rest easy as new cattle pillow venture looks set to be a hit

A Northern Ireland agricultural firm has moo-ved into a new venture by creating a pillow - for cows.

J Wilson, of Garvagh, has produced the only adjustable pillow on the market, developed by the company to improve the living conditions and productivity of dairy cows.

The company was formed in 1995 to manufacture products such as cow cubicles, mattresses and ventilation systems for the farming industry and employs seven people at a manufacturing operation near Coleraine. It also has a sales operation in Bristol.

J Wilson was helped by Invest Northern Ireland to design, manufacture and internationally market the product, called moovApillow.

Andrew Wilson, J Wilson Agriculture managing director, said the pillow is the outcome of a long-standing focus on products which improve conditions for cows and horses.

"Research shows that a comfortable cow produces higher levels and better quality of milk," he said.

"The latest product, a one piece, high absorbency and robust pillow, helps farmers meet the challenge for higher milk production.

"Given the volatility in milk prices over recent years, anything that helps to increase production can lead to better yields and returns for dairy farmers.

"Currently, we have good business in Great Britain, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

"We have identified substantial opportunities in these and other markets, especially Germany, for the product.

"We aim to drive current levels of sales in Great Britain and Europe to above 80% of turnover.

"With Invest NI's support and advice, we are implementing e-commerce technology to enable us to reach a much wider marketplace."
