Firms in with sporting chance of securing stadium projects

Northern Ireland companies are hoping to take gold with new business from the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

Both are to be hosted in Brazil and the companies will be taking part in Expo Estádio, the tradeshow and conference focused on infrastructure for stadia and sports facilities in Sao Paulo.

Invest NI is organising Northern Ireland's first participation in the event through its market visits programme.

The programme will also see business visits to high growth markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, and emerging regions such as Turkey, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Twelve events are being planned in the Middle East. First-time events include BATIMAT, the international building exhibition in Paris; Asia World Expo in Hong Kong; the Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom Show in London and Greenbuild in Toronto.

Dr Vicky Kell, Invest NI trade director, said exports were vital to grow Northern Ireland's economy.

She said: "Brazil is an important market as, apart from the major sporting events, the country's economy is growing strongly.

"The economy is already more buoyant than it was prior to the global economic crisis, and with the modernisation and expansion of transportation infrastructure, Brazil offers tremendous opportunities."
