Former south Belfast pub The Elms now Tesco Express

By Margaret Canning

A Tesco Express has opened on the site of former student pub The Elms in south Belfast.

The supermarket chain said it invested more than £1m to launch the new store, creating 14 jobs in the process.

It is the company's 19th Tesco Express in Northern Ireland.

Nama sold the site to the firm in 2013 for £1.15m after a bidding process fetched around 25% over the asking price.

The Elms, which was renamed The Globe before reverting to its old name, was part of pub group Botanic Inns before it went into administration in 2013.

A Tesco spokeswoman said the branch would feature "the biggest sandwich and on-the-go range of any Tesco Express store".

It is also the first to have card-only self-service checkouts.
