Garage door firm to create 17 jobs

By Clare Weir

A Co Antrim firm which makes garage doors is creating 17 new jobs in a £2m investment aimed at targeting new work in Britain.

Family-run Garage Door Systems in Ballymena manufactures and installs made-to-measure garage doors for the domestic and professional markets and already employs 33 staff.

The new roles include financial and marketing positions in a drive to increase export sales.

As well as adding the new jobs over the next three years, the firm, which was founded 20 years ago, also hopes to invest in new manufacturing equipment and processes, develop a marketing strategy and upgrade its production management system.

The company recently completed a research and development project to develop a new manufacturing process that is now being used to make a range of doors in small production runs with industry-leading turnaround times.

Garage Door Systems' managing director, Peter Doherty, said the company was currently the market leader in two of three target markets.

"We have recently identified and exploited opportunities to raise our profile and increase sales into the Great Britain market," he said.

"To further build on this we are now recruiting additional staff and aim to push our Great Britain sales up to over 70% of our turnover."

Invest NI has offered £220,000 to support the new jobs and over £33,000 for research and development.

Invest NI's chief executive, Alastair Hamilton, said: "This investment will help the company achieve its objective of growing sales in the Great Britain market."
