Golf resort on course for continued growth

By Symon Ross

One of Northern Ireland’s top golfing resorts has announced a 50% rise in turnover and forecasts similar growth in 2010 as overseas visitor numbers continue to grow.

The Lough Erne Resort in Fermanagh said its turnover had risen to £5.8m in 2009 from £3.9m in 2008. And the business anticipates similar growth this year, with turnover projected to rise to £8.5m.

Jim Treacy, owner of the resort, said that international visitors would likely play an increasingly important role in its ongoing expansion. “We envisage that approximately 10% of our visitors this year will come from international markets such as US, Canada, Germany and Japan.

“The resort’s unique setting within the Fermanagh Lakelands holds a significant appeal on an international level, as does The Faldo Championship Course, which opened last July,” he said.

Mr Treacy said the resort has a number of developments planned in the next six months that will result in significant investment.

These include a new refreshment facility on the course and further development of its restaurant.

It will also open The Faldo Academy in June for visitors keen to perfect their golfing skills — and a shop specialising in local artisan foods in July.

“The planned business growth and expansion of Lough Erne Resort in the years to come, will undoubtedly benefit the people of Fermanagh and the area as a whole,” he said.

The golf course was rated the third best newly designed course to open in 2009 by Sports Illustrated and Golf Magazine, while the resort’s Thai Spa has also attracted visitors, the owner said.

Jonathan Stapleton, general manager of Lough Erne Resort added: “The continued commitment and motivation of our |people has been key to the success of Lough Erne Resort and indeed this aspect plays a central role in delivering the vision of making Lough Erne Resort one of the world’s leading destinations.

“We continually receive positive guest comments in |relation to the friendliness, professionalism and attention |to detail exhibited by all of our staff.

“A number of key developments to further strengthen the team of professionals at Lough Erne Resort, will hopefully be announced in the Spring of 2010.”
