The owner of Peacocks has reported record annual profits and said it plans to open 76 stores over the coming year, creating more than 1,000 jobs.

Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group, which also owns fashion firm Jane Norman and homewares retailer Ponden Mill, said profits jumped 26% to £71.3m in the year to March 1 as it cut costs and boosted its appeal among over-40s.

The privately-owned firm, which runs more than 1,000 UK stores, said sales slipped 2.6% to £551.9m in a 53-week trading year as a result of increased competition from supermarkets and some store closures.
