Holohan family to open new restaurant in south Belfast

Family-run restaurant business Holohans is aiming for expansion - starting with a new venue in south Belfast.

The Holohan family has run the Barge at the Waterfront Hall since November 2013.

But they are now opening their second eaterie at the former Drennans restaurant on University Road, in a £100,000 investment. Head of marketing Emir Holohan said they could open even more venues in the province - and are looking into food manufacturing.

"Our brand name is well known and we feel there is a gap in the market for us to create our own products," she said.

Their south Belfast opening, which will create 12 new jobs, includes £15,000 from the Northern Ireland Small Business Loan Fund.

Restaurant manager Calvin Holohan said: "Our first restaurant has been so successful that we're having to turn customers away." He said there was demand for a second outlet.

Holohans at the Barge is styled as offering "classic Irish cuisine with a modern twist".

The Small Business Loan Fund is managed by Ulster Community Investment plc (UCI).

Harry McDaid from UCI said the family was "the type of management team" it wanted to help. "They have researched and understand their market, delivering a differentiated product which consistently fulfils the high expectations of their patrons," he added.
