A 60-year-old Belfast insurance company has been bought over by Yorkshire firm Towergate Insurance for an undisclosed sum.

Dawson Whyte has five offices across Northern Ireland and all 80 employees, including directors, will remain at the company under the new ownership.

Hugh McKinty from Dawson Whyte will take over as managing director of Towergate for Northern Ireland and will report to regional managing director, Kenny Hogg.

"Dawson Whyte is a business with an exceptional reputation and impressive history," group CEO of Towergate, Mark Hodges, said. "We are delighted to welcome this preeminent business into the Towergate Group."

Dawson Whyte was first formed as a partnership in the late 1950s. It offers both commercial and personal lines insurance services across Ireland, Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

"We are confident that the attitude and approach of our new colleagues is ideally suited to our own ambitions," chairman of Dawson Whyte, Gordon Whyte, said.
