Invest NI puts faith in media company's success

By Margaret Canning

A Co Down media company has married faith and film to win an £800,000 contract with Channel 4.

Waddell Media in Holywood will produce 365 factual films lasting 90 seconds about religion and faith to be shown immediately after the Channel 4 news every evening. The first film will be shown on July 5.

Jannine Waddell, managing director of Waddell Media, said: "We are delighted to secure this

high-value commission from Channel 4, which further cements the company's reputation as a leading producer in the UK. I welcome the increased commitment Channel 4 has shown to the production sector in Northern Ireland."

Waddell secured the contract with financial help from Invest NI. The economic development agency has given £470,000 to Waddell since 2007 to develop sales outside Northern Ireland. Almost £300,000 has been offered through Northern Ireland Screen's product development fund, financed by Invest NI and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Alastair Hamilton, chief executive of Invest NI, said: "This contract reflects Channel 4's confidence in Waddell Media's professionalism and creativity and is the latest in a series of commissions that the company has secured including several in the USA.

"The creative industry is one of Invest NI's target sectors. With its potential to generate high-value jobs and export sales, independent television is a valuable part of that sector and is making an important contribution to our local economy."

Every film will be accessible on new website and on Channel 4's catch-up service 4OD.
