Jobs boost on the horizon for City of Culture as major hotel project starts
A new Premier Inn hotel in Londonderry will create 65 jobs when it opens at the end of the year.
Construction of the 60-bedroom hotel got under way earlier this week and represents a £60m investment by the company.
Set on 1.6 acres, the hotel will also include a 200-seat Brewers' Fayre restaurant and is the first phase in the Crescent Link Master Plan, a £56m scheme in the area by developers Orana Group.
"This is hopefully the first exciting step in this major regeneration project focused on quality, sustainable, long-term job creation for approximately 2,000 people on completion," Mark Adams, development director of GML (NI), a subsidiary of the Orana Group, said.
"The scheme is primarily focused on retaining local talent and ultimately, attracting further inward private investment."
Cathy Hopkins, regional manager of Premier Inn Hotels Ireland, said that the north west offers a big opportunity for the company.
"With the city's tourism figures expected to double in 2013, we are delighted to bring a new Premier Inn to Derry-Londonderry," she said.
