Kilrea firm invests £1m to stay at cutting edge

A 40-year-old family firm is celebrating by investing £1m in technology and training.

SJC Hutchinson Engineering in Kilrea, Co Londonderry who are laser cutting specialists, have also created 10 new jobs and plan to expand the plant by 11,000 sq ft, making it one of the largest of its kind in Ireland.

By the end of 2011, the company will have three flat-bed laser cutting machines, costing £700,000 each, and is the only company in Ireland to have a 3D tube laser cutter, costing £800,000.

Mark Hutchinson, managing director, said that having faced some of the most challenging market conditions in living memory, the firm has still recorded a significant year of growth so far.

"Our new tube laser cutting machine has given us an important competitive edge allowing us to take on more jobs, speed up the manufacturing process and keep costs down for our customers," he said.

"We knew that to survive recession and grow we had to be bold in our thinking and competitive with every aspect of production."
