LinkedIn appoints ex Google Ireland boss John Herlihy as head of EMEA operations
LinkedIn has appointed former Google Ireland chief John Herlihy as head of its European business.
Herlihy, one of Ireland’s most senior technology professionals, will join professional networking website LinkedIn as vice president and managing director of its Europe, Middle East and Africa operations.
He will be responsible for the company’s strategic direction as well as driving member growth.
With more than 400m members worldwide, including executives from every Fortune 500 company, LinkedIn is the largest professional network on the internet.
The job will keep Herlihy in Ireland as LinkedIn’s international headquarters is based in Dublin. Late last year the company revealed plans to doubled its Irish workforce to 1,200.
Herlihy spent the last decade at Google in Dublin, where he was vice president of SMB sales and head of the country’s large Irish operation. In that time he grew and led Google’s Irish office from 50 to over 2,500 people. He left the company in April, succeeded by current Google Ireland chief Ronan Harris.
Herlihy is a non-executive director of a number of private and public companies, in the finance, biotech, software and agri-food sectors.
At LinkedIn he will take over from Ariel Eckstein who has been the company’s managing director in EMEA for the past four years. Eckstein recently took on a global leadership role at LinkedIn, heading up an international team that looks after the company’s largest customers.
“We are thrilled to have John on board to lead our business in EMEA” said Mike Gamson LinkedIn’s SVP of Global Solutions. “He brings to the company more than 20 years of management experience, driving sales growth at several leading companies.
"Under John's leadership, EMEA will continue to be a very important region for LinkedIn. At the same time we are very excited that Ariel took on a global role at LinkedIn. Ariel has helped the business grow from less than 100 to over 1500 employees and has established us as a leading company that counts the majority of FTSE 100, CAC 40 and DAX 30 as clients.
"EMEA now has more members than the United States and the region accounts for more than 25pc of our revenue.’’
"I relish the opportunity to lead LinkedIn’s business in the region and I have always admired the company’s ethos’’, said John Herlihy. “LinkedIn’s vision to create economic opportunity for every member of the workforce is a powerful one and resonates with those looking to start, foster and advance their careers. I am looking forward to working with our team to realise this vision and to further strengthen LinkedIn’s presence across EMEA, from both a member and business perspective.”
