Lunch isn't for wimps: The Garrick, Chichester Street, Belfast

As a Friday night watering hole there's no doubt the Garrick Bar on Belfast's Chichester Street is one of the finest venues around.

Its wide selection of beers and ciders from every corner of the globe provide a veritable treasure chest to the drinker with a taste for refreshment ranging from as far afield as Australia and as close to home as Lisburn. But I digress.

Being as this is meant to be a column about food it was off to the Garrick for a spot of lunch last week to partake in some pub grub and stare longingly at the beers.

The menu offers everything you'd want from a pub including burgers, fish and chips, a pie and sausage and mash but also includes a nod to the modern bistro with Thai fishcakes, penne carbonara and a steak sandwich. It's good, hearty stuff and, although the burger which this reporter enjoyed was maybe a conservative choice, it delivered on all fronts, satiating an appeitite honed from a slight hangover combined with a lack of breakfast.

We managed to avoid imbibing but I would urge you not to follow our lead if you pop in for a bite to eat because there are few places in Northern Ireland where you'll be able to travel the world through the medium of beer.

Good food and good beer. What's not to like?
