Making the cut: firm powers ahead with launch

By Clare Weir

The first of 200 new single wind turbines for Northern Ireland has been officially launched in Co Antrim.

Over the next four years, Simple Power is installing the medium-sized structures across Northern Ireland to collectively generate electricity for the equivalent of 50,000 homes.

The firm has already started exporting power from the new Randalstown fixture and a second turbine on a neighbouring farm this week.

Electricity generated feeds into the Northern Ireland grid with the power purchased by Power NI, the region's biggest electricity retailer.

Environment Minister Alex Attwood and a delegation from global wind turbine manufacturer, Vergnet, travelled from their manufacturing base in France to attend the launch event.

Simple Power's chief executive Paul Carson pointed to Northern Ireland's vast natural resources as a major asset.
