Manufacturing deals help Belfast law firm Tughans retain top place on adviser table

By Margaret Canning

Belfast law firm Tughans has topped a major league table for corporate lawyers for the second year in a row. The practice leads the Experian league tables for its role advising on big deals in Northern Ireland in 2016, from the sale of Sophia Search to Mixaroo, to the acquisition of PathXL by Philips in Holland.

The firm, led by managing partner Patrick Brown, took part in more than 30% of Northern Ireland deals during 2016 - over 38% more than the next-placed adviser.

Manufacturing deals were the most common in Northern Ireland over the year, with sales of major companies such as Retlan Manufacturing and Thompson Aero Seating during 2016.

They were sold to Chinese firms CIMC Vehicles and Aviation Industry Corporation of China respectively. Delta Print and Packaging in west Belfast was sold off to Finnish firm Huhtamaki.

Mr Brown said: "The number of deals we completed has doubled from 2015.

"This is a positive sign that, despite continuing uncertainty in the economy, there is still significant activity and clients are placing their trust in us to deliver the high quality legal services required to support and execute their strategic plans."

He also said that while the biggest deals were in manufacturing - with Tughan's work on the £80m Delta deal its biggest submission to Experian of 2016 - the real estate and technology sectors had also been active over the period.
