Measuring up well after master deal

By Heather McGarrigle

A Belfast clothing alterations firm has sewn up a master franchise agreement which it hopes will triple its turnover.

The Zip Yard has grown steadily in Northern Ireland and the Republic since it was set up in 2005.

The company has sold franchise licences to clients in Dublin, Letterkenny, Cork, Limerick, Dún Laoghaire and more recently Nenagh in Co Tipperary.

The firm exhibited at February’s Irish Franchise Exhibition, with assistance from Invest NI.

Following connections made there with businessman Nigel Toplis, ex-chairman of the British Franchise Association and author of several franchising publications, The Zip Yard has signed a master franchise agreement. This will see up to 48 new branches opening across England, Wales and Scotland over the next five years.

Brian Kielt, co-founder and director of The Zip Yard, said: “Our master franchise agreement represents a major milestone in the development of our company and we are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Nigel Toplis in launching our business model across England, Scotland and Wales.”

Gren Armstrong, Invest NI’s North Eastern regional office manager said: “Building on its competitive position in the Republic of Ireland, The Zip Yard has secured a lucrative expansion opportunity.”

Mr Toplis, master franchise holder, said: “The Zip Yard is an excellent brand, is well proven and is strongly presented on the high street and we see a huge market in the UK.
