Mum's the word as organic baby food range hits SuperValu shelves

By Clare Weir

A busy mum-of-two from Co Tyrone is celebrating after winning a contract to supply her range of organic baby food to all 39 SuperValu stores in Northern Ireland.

Shauna McCarney from Fintona founded Heavenly Tasty Organics after her own children suffered food allergies and she found it hard to find natural products for them.

Her frozen, organic fruit and vegetable purees are for weaning babies aged from four months onto solid foods and are steamed from fresh, then frozen and packaged into a 250g re-sealable pouch, with each pack containing 10 heart-shaped ice cube sized portions. "It's been a hard slog over the last two years but the product is now launched and is finally on the market," said Shauna.

"I think now is a great time to be in the food industry because there are people out there who want natural food sourced in the UK, not just bought in from all over the world by the multi-nationals.

"Most baby foods are stored at ambient temperatures and have a lot of salt and preservatives - I was looking for something else so I had to go out and do it myself.

"Musgrave Retail Partners NI has been very supportive and I am delighted that a company with local produce at its heart has committed to supply my products to SuperValu retailers.

The product development is based on market research in many SuperValu stores and Musgrave, distribution partner to the stores, has been working with Shauna for months on the product.

Paul Bennett, fresh and frozen food manager with SuperValu parent company Musgrave Retail Partners NI, welcomed the new addition to stores here, saying: "It is a perfect fit for our supporting local ethos."
