New fishermen on course for career at sea
Ten new fishermen are blazing a trail as they become the first to take part in Northern Ireland's inaugural fishing industry New Entrants Training Course.
Over the next three weeks, the new fishermen from Ardglass and Kilkeel will take part in an intensive training course - and by the end of it they will hold the statutory qualifications needed for a career at sea, along with many of the practical skills.
Maritta McLornan, manager of the Northern Ireland Fishermen's Group Training Association (NIFGTA), said: "This is the first of what I hope is a regular intake of new entrants to the fishing industry in Northern Ireland.
"With funding from the UK's Sea Fish Industry Authority and the European Fisheries Fund this is a unique opportunity for those wishing to pursue a career with the commercial fishing fleet."
Alan McCulla, Anglo-North Irish Fish Producers Organisation chief executive, said: "Attracting new blood to the fishing fleet has been a problem, but I hope this course signals this particular challenge is being addressed."
