Newry building firm starts work on school in Edinburgh

By Margaret Canning

Newry building firm O'Hare & McGovern has started work on the construction of a new £26.4m school in Edinburgh.

The family-run firm began work this week on the new Boroughmuir High School in Fountainbridge in the city, and is due to finish the project in 2016.

The Edinburgh school contract brings to £110m the company's estimated turnover for this year - which a spokesman said would be the highest in its 41-year history.

O'Hare & McGovern contracts manager, Cathal O'Hare, said: "This is a massively prestigious project for us at O'Hare & McGovern.

"It signifies our growing presence in Scotland."

The firm is also involved in developments in England, including Newton Abbot, Devon, Bristol and Liverpool.

Back at home, it won the contract for the £35m revamp of Windsor Stadium in Belfast, bucking the trend for many building firms who are struggling to find work on home turf.

It is also working on the new £25m centre for experimental medicine at Queen's University, Belfast.
