By Margaret Canning

Passenger numbers at Irish airline Aer Lingus climbed 2.3% last month, it has announced.

There were 815,000 passengers on its flights during March, an increase of 2.3% on a year earlier.

The airline, which is considering whether or not to agree to being bought over by IAG, said long-haul passengers were up by just over 25%.

However, numbers of short-haul passengers had fallen slightly to 625,000 from 628,000 in March last year.

The overall passenger load factor was 79.1% - up 4.4 percentage points.
