Pie kings Greggs opens first outlet in Northern Ireland

By John Mulgrew

High street bakery giant Greggs is finally set to launch its first store in Northern Ireland, it has been revealed.

Cheap and cheerful pies and pasties will soon be making their way to hungry drivers on the M2 as part the first service station to open here.

The store will be based at the first Applegreen station - which was officially opened yesterday - and is located on the northbound carriageway between Glengormley and Templepatrick.

It ends years of speculation and growing interest that well-known pastry purveyors Greggs would finally add a Northern Ireland outlet to their 1,670 stores located right across the UK.

The UK's largest bakery chain - which is listed on the London Stock Exchange - will bring some of its best-known bites to its inaugural shop.

That includes substantial-sounding items such as the steak bake and sausage and bean melt, as well as sweet and sticky yums yums and triple-chocolate donuts.

It's understood the new Greggs - which the firm has said will be a 12-month trial - will open its doors later this month.

The company did not comment on whether it could further branch out on to Northern Ireland's high streets.

A spokesman for the firm told the Belfast Telegraph: "Greggs are excited to be trialling a test site with the Irish motorway service station operator Applegreen, at a service area located on the M2 in Belfast.

"The trial, which is due to start at the end of April and run for a 12-month period, will enable Greggs to assess Northern Ireland's appetite for its 'Always Fresh. Always Tasty' customer offer."

Earlier this year the firm's chief executive Roger Whiteside said it was "closer than ever before" to setting up shop in Northern Ireland.

Although prices vary in the UK, Greggs sells items such as sausage rolls for around 80p, while their pies can be bought for upwards of £1.

Ten tasty items from the Greegs menu:

  • Omelette breakfast baguette
  • Yum yums
  • Caramel custard donut
