A foldable, portable ramp for lovers of extreme sports has been named best Northern Ireland invention at an awards ceremony.

JumPack last night won the grand prize of £13,000 at the INVENT awards run by Catalyst Inc - the new name for the Northern Ireland Science Park.

The Innovation Founder award - recognising life-long contributions to innovation - went to Martin Naughton, the founder of heater company Glen Dimplex.

Guests at the ceremony in the Waterfront Hall were invited to try out a stunt bike in order to road-test the JumPack, which is aimed at skateboarders and BMX enthusiasts.

INVENT programme manager Peter Edgar said afterwards: "This year's winner shows that invention knows no heights - the sky is the limit for Northern Irish ingenuity."

The awards were sponsored by Bank of Ireland UK. Julie-Ann O'Hare, its director of business banking, said it had been "another highly successful celebration of innovation in Northern Ireland".

"Bank of Ireland is proud to be involved in recognising the huge contribution of world leading businesses such as Glen Dimplex, founded in Northern Ireland, and encouraging the business successes of tomorrow," she added.

Steve Orr, of Catalyst Inc, said: "The INVENT awards, in partnership with Bank of Ireland UK, recognise proof-of-concept stage innovations and have long been considered the foremost night of invention, showcasing the best of our innovative entrepreneurs across the region.

"Everyone has a life-changing invention inside them. The common trait among the inventors is that they had a problem bothering them and they solved it with a new invention. Everyone can do that. It's all about taking action."
