Punjana tea company strikes gold at Great Taste Awards

A Belfast tea company has won 11 Gold Stars in the food industry standard Great Taste Awards 2013.

Thompsons Family Teas, which makes Northern Ireland's best-selling tea, Punjana, won double gold with the recently launched 'Thompsons Signature Blend' and their new speciality range made a dramatic entrance, winning double gold with another new blend, 'Turkish Apple ... Amazing!'.

'Passionfruit and Orange Cocktail', 'Lemon Smoothie' and 'Organic Green Tea Pineapple' infusions also picked up gold.

Staple brand Punjana won another Gold Star, bringing its total to 10 such accolades over the last six years.

Before gold is awarded, between 12 and 20 experts taste, discuss and agree on the merits of every product.

For two or three stars, up to 25 judges must unanimously agree.

Over 350 experts including key buyers, retailers, chefs and food writers blind taste entries to ensure they are fairly and independently assessed.

The Guild of Fine Food's Great Taste Awards gave Thompson's Family Teas nine Gold Stars in both the 2011 and 2012 awards with a triple gold for Thompson's Titanic Tea.

Cousins Ross and David Thompson blend the entire range of Thompson's Family Teas.

Ross Thompson said that producing the 'perfect everyday cuppa' has long been a passion for the company.

"To win gold on four different specialist products in their first year is a great accolade," he said.
