Smartphone app tipped to be hit with tourists in Northern Ireland

By Clare Weir

Fed-up with bulky guidebooks and irritating tour groups?

A Northern Ireland entrepreneur has the answer with a new smartphone application that provides information on attractions, accommodation and things to do throughout Northern Ireland.

The walking and driving audio guide My Tour Talk, part-voiced by Pamela Ballentine, is predicted to be a major sucess with tourists.

It was recently one of four apps to win a procurement competition run by the Technology Strategy Board, funded by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment. Formed a little over a year ago, Tourtalk LLP is run by Julie McNeice, who previously worked for 18 years in the mobile communications industry.

She works with a team of researchers, writers, illustrators and sound engineers to deliver the content, which includes culture, heritage, stories and plenty of useful local information.

The app is also available from tourist information centres including the Belfast Welcome Centre. My Tour Talk has also secured a sponsorship package from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.
