Taxes killing off a pint of beer with friends

A pint of beer in a pub with friends is becoming less affordable due to "sharp rises" in tax and VAT, says a new report.

The British Beer & Pub Association said sales were down by 4.3% from July to September compared with last year - 45 million fewer pints over the quarter - while sales increased in supermarkets and off-licences.

Brigid Simmonds, its chief executive, said: "Pubs bear the brunt of Britain's punitive tax policies on beer."
