Vote early, vote younger: SDLP

* THE SDLP has put down an amendment to the Northern Ireland Bill currently before the Commons that would allow the voting age in Assembly and local council elections to be lowered to 16 or 17.

The party backs votes at 16 and its amendment would allow politicians in the province to make a decision on lowering the age of the franchise.

In Scotland, 16 and 17-year-olds will get to vote in next year's referendum on independence.
