Belfast tech chief planned to be missionary before move to Canada changed everything

By Emma Deighan

One of the men behind Belfast's Ormeau Baths entrepreneurial tech hub has revealed that he originally wanted to become a missionary before making his mark on Silicon Valley.

Mark Dowds, who is also co-founder of tech insurance firm Trov Inc in California, said his parents' generosity inspired him to help others and undertake a degree in theology and divinity at Queen's University Belfast.

"My parents were very generous, not just to me, but everyone around them. My dad was very active in the community and gave most of his money away," said Mr Dowds.

After spending many years in Canada and California, he returned home in 2015 to discover a changed business world.

"Over the last decade, there has been an emergence of new companies that are taking our economy into a new age.

"I saw so many of these people meeting in different places, but what that community lacked was a tech hub in the centre of Belfast, which is why a few of us got together and decided to invest into setting up the Ormeau Baths."
