Well-known developer Kevin McKay has announced a bid to redevelop a golf course on the outskirts of south Belfast.

Under the plan, the 18-hole Mount Ober course at Ballymaconaghy Road in Knockbracken would be turned into a nine holer, with a new clubhouse.

The club's existing driving range would also be relocated.

Mr McKay, who has been behind a series of major projects in Belfast, has launched the bid under his Johncorp development company. A pre-application community consultation is under way ahead of the submission of a planning application to Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council.

In a statement yesterday from Johncorp, a company spokesperson said: "We are very excited by our plans for the redeveloped golf course because it will deliver a high quality sports facility that can benefit the wider neighbourhood. We understand from recent discussions that there has been a demand in the area for improved leisure amenities and this scheme will make a significant contribution to achieving that."
