Co Tyrone developer and contractor McAleer & Rushe has won international project of the year for a £50m student accommodation project in the south of England.

The Cookstown firm was the design and build contractor for Global Student Accommodation’s 1,000-bed Catherine House scheme in Portsmouth.

McAleer & Rushe triumphed over four other international companies to lift the award at the Irish Construction Industry Awards at Citywest Hotel in Dublin.

McAleer & Rushe Contracts UK Ltd recently reported a turnover of £334m in 2017, with pre-tax profits up from £10m to £13.4m.

Staff numbers have also increased from 271 to 300 as it continues to pursue major construction projects.

McAleer & Rushe secured its latest major deal in England last month. The design and build company will construct a new 330-bed hotel in Birmingham for the Dalata Hotel Group.

Its most recent work in Belfast was on the construction of the new Maldron Hotel.
