Northern Ireland construction firm Henry Brothers has won a £4m deal to build the first phase of a new fire and rescue training centre in Co Tyrone.

Henry Brothers in Magherafelt will work on a six-storey training facility, a building with classrooms and a new access road for the centre at Desertcreat.

The facility, which has been designed by Hamilton Architects, will enable trainee firefighters to work on putting out simulated major blazes such as fires at high-rise flats as well as business properties.

Ken Henning, vice chairman of the board of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We welcome the continued government commitment to this capital project and we thank the Department of Health and Mid Ulster District Council."

He added that it was a "milestone" for the project, which he described as a key priority in the Programme for Government.
