Ex-footballer hoping he'll score with award for new business

By Graham Luney

A former Derry City footballer is hoping he's found the winning formula in the business world.

Gareth McGlynn, who made 378 appearances for the Brandywell club, is competing for the title of Ireland's Best Young Entrepreneur.

The 35-year-old and his wife Ciara, who used to play for Derry's ladies' team, have set up Niche SSP (Specialist Staffing Partners), a company which helps construction firms in the United States recruit the best quantity surveyors (estimators in the US).

As well as hoping to land the entrepreneur title, the couple, who live in Derry, have been nominated for Best Start Up Business in the Irish National Enterprise Awards.

There are financial rewards associated with both prizes and McGlynn, who helped the Candystripes win five League of Ireland Cups and two FAI Cups, admitted it's an exciting time as his business develops at a fast rate.

"An award would be a nice way to celebrate our work," said the former midfielder, who was born in Donegal.

"We are competing for the title of Ireland's Best Young Entrepreneur, recognising the work of start up businesses for those aged between 18 and 35, with a business under 18 months old.

"The official presentation takes place on April 19 in Dublin, and the award ceremony will be at Google Headquarters on Sunday, April 22

"We are also competing in the Irish National Enterprise Awards, where we have been nominated as Best Start Up Business. You can find us at"
