Fears over productivity growth rate

By Alan Jones

Business leaders have expressed concern over new figures showing "weak" productivity.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said labour productivity for July to September 2018 grew by 0.2% compared with the same quarter a year ago and was the weakest since the third quarter of 2016.

Manufacturing experienced labour productivity growth of 1.7%, while the services achieved a paltry 0.1%.

Compared with the previous quarter, UK labour productivity is estimated to have decreased by 0.4% in the third quarter.

Katherine Kent, of the ONS, said growth in labour productivity was around a tenth of its historic trend rate.
