First phase of City Airport's £15m project completed

By Emma Deighan

The first phase of a £15m investment at George Best Belfast City Airport has been completed.

It has given way to 30% more space at the refurbished Duty Free and WH Smith airside units.

Joanne Deighan, commercial manager at Belfast City Airport, said passengers will notice a "huge improvement" this season: "Over the summer months we expect to welcome approximately 10,000 passengers through the terminal each day so it's fantastic to provide these customers with a world class travel retail experience that will really enhance the customer journey."

Later in the summer upgrade works to the security area will be completed and towards the end of the year the investment will go towards an improved food and beverage offering.

The new space at the shopping area of the airport has allowed both retailers to extend their offerings with Duty Free now providing cosmetic ranges Bare Minerals, Elemis and Smashbox products for the first time.

Meanwhile the new WH Smith store will now offer a wider selection of food and beverage items with a focus on meal deals, travel accessories, toiletries, magazines and books.

The extra space has also allowed it to boost its mini toiletry items under 100ml and beauty products from Maybelline and Rimmel have been introduced.

Upon completion the investment will also see the Departure Lounge feature additional seating space and charging points as well as improved toilet facilities.

Ms Deighan added: "The walk-through design within World Duty Free allows our passengers to easily see the brands available as they move through the Departure Lounge."
