By Margaret Canning

The head of the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) has won a prestigious Belfast Telegraph award for his contribution to farming.

Dr Sinclair Mayne, who's retiring from his position, has also carried out research on grassland and milk production.

At the Ulster Farmers' Union annual dinner on Friday night, he was presented with the Belfast Telegraph Cup by UFU president Barclay Bell.

Mr Bell said: "Dr Mayne is recognised internationally for his research on grassland and milk production. He has had an expansive career in agriculture and his work has been ground-breaking.

"He has held posts including leader of the dairy research programme at the Grassland Research Institute in Devon, scientific adviser with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and chief executive of AFBI."

The UFU also presented the Mary Wilson Trophy for best overall group to the South Tyrone Group, while The Cuthbert Trophy was given to the Mid Tyrone Group.
