Finalists have been announced for this year's Henderson Wholesale Fresh Innovation Awards.

The company stages the awards at the Balmoral Show - which starts today and runs until Saturday - every year to celebrate the food businesses who supply Henderson's Spar and Eurospar stores, and continue to grow despite uncertain times.

Categories include excellence in product innovation, young agri-food innovator and own brand product of the year.

And there will also be a winner announced for a category added last year to honour someone who's made a major contribution to the local agri-food industry. Brian Irwin of Irwin's Bakery was last year's winner.

Nigel Dugan, trading controller at Henderson Wholesale, said: "With the uncertainty of whether or not we'd get a deal passed for Brexit, and in particular how this will impact the fresh foods industry here, it has been a challenging year for our local food companies.

"However, the contingencies and innovation that has been set in place by farmers, growers and suppliers knows no bounds and we've been very pleased to see the amount of growth experienced in the 2018/19 year of trading."
