House builder surpasses its target with 207 new homes

By Margaret Canning

House builder Hagan Homes has said it finished work on 207 properties in the last year - making it one of its most successful 12 months in business. The Ballyclare firm said its completions were up 8.4% on the year before and it had surpassed its target of finishing 180 homes.

And the tally of 207 makes the year to the end of June 2017 its second most successful year since it was set up in 1988. Its busiest was 2006, just before the property crash.

Managing director Jamesy Hagan said the firm also recorded turnover of over £17.5m during the year - up nearly 5% on the 12 months ending in June 2016.

Mr Hagan said: "We are absolutely delighted with the results and believe it is a clear indication that what we are offering, in terms of specification of build, is exactly what our customers want. We aim to build affordable, quality, stylish homes and achieve this by appointing award-winning architects, interior designers and craftspeople."

And he said the company was seeing a "gradual improvement" in the housing market.

"Quality, location and affordability remain the key selling points. We have already started work this year on four new sites in Dunmurry, Carrickfergus, Coleraine and Ballyclare. Further sites in Ballymena, Dundonald, Comber, Dromore and Belfast are scheduled to begin in the coming months."

But he said challenges remained, including delays in the planning system, including the time taken by bodies such as Transport NI and Rivers Agency to respond to applications.

And he claimed NI Water was charging "excessive" amounts for sewer bonds on new developments.

NI Water has said bonds are in place to protect buyers of properties.
