Maghera joiners celebrates 30th year with £5m extension and the addition of 52 new jobs

Northern Ireland's Specialist Joinery Group is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a £5m factory extension and the creation of 52 jobs.

This is the second major investment in the past five years by the family business, which carries out work for high-end clients including hotels.

As part of a major £1m contract, it manufactured a replica staircase from the Titanic for a themed hotel in Liverpool. It also worked on the Lough Eske resort in Donegal.

Now it is adding features like a gym and 'breakout' areas to its factory.

Founder and chairman John Bosco O'Hagan said: "The business has grown rapidly since our last major investment in 2013, resulting in the need for more capacity to meet our customers' needs.

"We remain intensely export-focused as well as maintaining our position as a market leader on the island of Ireland."

Mr O'Hagan said the company, which has around 120 staff, had worked for law firms, pharma companies and hospitals, and for famous companies such as Estee Lauder, Google, Rolls-Royce, AECOM and Amazon.

"We view this latest extension as a critical investment in the group's growth and development. We have built our brand reputation purely on people and the quality and service they deliver," he said.

"This project is foremost an investment in our people and their ability to provide world class joinery and the ultimate client experience.

"As our team grows, we will work hard to maintain this family culture. New additions of a staff gym, extensive breakout areas and 150-seater staff restaurant to Specialist HQ will further enhance our capability to recruit and retain the best talent in the industry."

In its latest accounts Specialist Joinery Fittings Ltd reported pre-tax profits of £0.9m on sales of £16.7m.

Invest NI is providing funding of £470,000 towards the investment, part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Bill Montgomery, Invest NI's director of advanced manufacturing and engineering, said: "Specialist Joinery Group is an established and growing manufacturing business which has positioned itself as the preferred supplier for large scale projects across a range of sectors.

"We are delighted to have been working alongside the business for a number of years. This investment and expansion of the company headquarters will help ensure it can continue to successfully compete for larger scale projects with shorter timescales.

"The creation of new manufacturing jobs is always positive news. We would like to congratulate Specialist Joinery Group on its 30th anniversary in business and wish the company continued success."

The firm's operation was described by Invest NI as a "highly advanced and efficient manufacturing facility".
